Please join YWSE on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at 7pm when we present Rut R. Martinez-Alicea who will explore discriminations in the workplace and our personal lives.
At the next YWSE meeting, we will explore oppressions in the work place and our personal lives (primarily gender-based oppressions) with the ultimate goal being to explore, practice and engage in an active commitment to end them. By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:
-to identify the fundamental concepts of oppressions with a focus on gender based oppression
-strengthen, develop and practice strategies to identify oppressions and how to stop them
-practice principles, basic skills and strategies informed by basic anti-oppression practices
-strengthen and gain basic skills to actively engage themselves and others in ending oppressions

RUT R. MARTINEZ-ALICEA, a native of Puerto Rico, has over 15 years of experience in developing and facilitating training programs. She currently is the Executive Director of Uniting to Understand Racism and operates her own business, Hybrid Thinking Consulting, LLC. Through diverse modalities, multiple learning tools and strategies, she designs and facilitates highly interactive trainings for multiple learning styles and abilities, in English and Spanish. Ms. Martinez-Alicea creates learning environments where knowledge creation and learning experience is a collaborative and dialectic process. She has facilitated learning experiences for groups ranging from 5 to 200 participants and ages 13 to 75 years. Her areas of expertise are oppressions, racism, intercultural competence, communication and group facilitation skills, leadership development, and domestic and sexual violence. As a member of advisory boards, councils and a regional network, Ms. Martinez-Alicea has contributed in the development of culturally competent services and policies affecting survivors of domestic and sexual violence (DSV). In addition to her training profession, Ms. Martinez-Alicea has been working in the educational and social service environments and in the field of domestic and sexual violence victims' services for the last 12 years. Her work on behalf of DSV survivors includes the design and implementation of the 1st 24hrs statewide Spanish crisis line in Oregon: Línea UNICA. Ms. Martinez-Alicea has an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Universidad de Puerto Rico with a focus on power dynamics and a minor in Fine Arts. She has continued her graduate studies at Illinois State University, Marylhurst University, and Portland State University in training and development, in addition to art therapy.
