"A lot of people give up on things when the opportunity is right around the corner."
With another bitter New York winter coming to an end, what’s more invigorating than a fellow YWSE sister in bloom! Meet Nya Jade, a singer/ songwriter and recent young-adult author residing in the California Bay Area.
Born in Ghana, Nya traveled around the world as a child. This multi-cultural upbringing set the tone of her eclectic life journey. As a girl scout, she experienced directly the lifelong impact a women organization can have in developing a young girl’s business mindset along with her philanthropic one. This notion of a female community attracted Nya to support YWSE early in its creation. Nya has always been inspired by women leaders and actively supports them; for instance, she performed for an audience of 15,000 people at a Hillary Clinton campaign block party in the Bay Area—a true testimony to women empowerment through both art and politics.
“Young female troubadour worth keeping your eyes and ears on.” - USA Today
“Her cool singing voice recalls Sade.” - LA Times
After attending boarding school in Boston, Nya headed west to study at Stanford University. Nya’s Stanford degrees (that’s right, plural) show the academic integrity behind her artistic expression. With a B.A. in Economics and M.A. in Sociology, she was pre-med with a visionary hope to benefit others. By transforming her heart’s intellect into soulful songwriting, Nya’s studies inadvertently brought her to her music career.
Trying to become an artist is nearly impossible without financial support, and “selling out” seems inevitable. But despite these obstacles, Nya put herself in authority by creating her own music label to sign with—an indie artist doubling as an independent woman. Nya received exposure and funding as a musician through building relationships and networking. Her success led her independently made music videos to be featured on big networks such as VH1-Soul, BET-J and MTV-U.
As Nya beautifully put, "A lot of people give up on things when the opportunity is right around the corner." In reference to technology, the potential to self-make a career is only limited to one’s bravery. And that’s exactly what Nya excels in, to have the boldness to transform herself as a creative professional. Her newly published Young Adult novel uses her talent in song writing and changes it to story telling.
Phoebe Pope and the Year of Four is about a girl leading a double life, as a regular high school student and as a shape-shifter in an underground spy school. A suspicious crush and the recent death of her father puts Phoebe in a whirlwind of growing pains, with life’s complexities are only heightened in this spectacular setting. While the novel is fantasy, its lesson is no fiction. Keeping true to her humanitarian core, Nya hopes to reach out and create a social change through her writing. Like the popular novel by Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games, the complexities of a female protagonist are addressed in Young Adult stories like these, promoting a strong sense of women empowerment while giving into a guiltless sensationalism.
So be sure to check out Nya’s book on Amazon and show your support! She also hopes to transform her work to a film production, adding to her litany of talents and creations. Let’s encourage and inspire each other. We the women of YWSE definitely do, so join us today and be part of a network of visionary women leaders who are transforming the world for good and uniting while doing it!
